What is lubrication? After studying how the engine works, you will indirectly notices that the metal of the engine parts are rubbing each other. Thus, frictional heat is generated. So, we need lubrication system to reduce the heat as well as smoothen the movement of the engine. What lubricator used? We use engine oil to lubricate the engine. This term is very familiar huh? Yeah, it is the one where you need to change it sometimes when u gets your car serviced. Referring to the figure above, firstly the oil is stored in the oil pan. You often see a mechanics put a case underneath your car and open up the cover to let the old engine oil flows out. The oil was come from the oil pan. The next phase is feeding the oil into the oil filter to clean up any unwanted debris. The oil pump does the feeding job. It sucks out the oil from the oil pan and then through the oil gallery, it is distributed to each portion of the engine for the lubricating job. Every end of the engine is lubricated, and for a layman imagination, it is like our human blood. What is cooling? As the simple terms, I think you do have some guesses in your mind. Yeah, that's right, as we have mentioned a couple of time, the metal friction and the direct expose to the engine combustion itself causes very high temperature and thus need cooling to avoid seizure as well as keeping a suitable temperature to run the engine. I believe that in your mind, you will ask that is it the cooler it is the better? The answer is No. It is similar to human being, are you comfort if the temperature around you is chilling cold? And that's same to hot. We don't like either. The engine has the same characteristic. It needs an optimum and suitable temperature to run in perfect performance. There are two types of cooling system, which is water-cooled and air-cooled. Most of the car use water-cooling system and very few of them are using the air-cooling. By referring to the figure above, we will explain on how it basically works. The water jacket is a water passage provided in the cylinder head and cylinder block in a manner to surround the combustion chamber. To make this simply, just imagine you are wearing a jacket, which can carry cooling water inside it. It has the similar theory. Once the water passage through the engine and the water becomes warm, it is directed to the radiator by water pump. The radiator is placed in front of almost every vehicle for the reason of getting natural air to cool down the passage water when the vehicle moves. The radiator fan will be turn on when a vehicle stops or when cooling is needed. After the water is being cooled, it is sent to the water jacket of the engine again. This process repeated in daily driving. That is why the radiator fan is very important and you often hear a vehicle broke down cause of overheating. Faulty radiator fan was one of the cause of the problem. |
