8 Steps to Save Fuel 1. Keep your right foot light Many youngsters like to press the accelerator hard when they are initiating the car's movement. In this case a lot fuel is used even though it is a short period of time. The amount of fuel used that time can equal to a few times of cruising speed!! So, always try to keep your right foot light on the streets if you want to safe most of the fuel. 2. Keep your tyres at optimum pressure Do you know that deflated tyres will increase the rolling resistance and thus increasing the fuel economy? Not only this, for your extra information, it will cause wear on the tyres more fast and even will affect the safety of the vehicle whenever in high speed especially cornering. So, check your tyre pressure at least once a month in order to safe some of your fuel money to petrol station and most importantly your safety. 3. Warm up your car properly Some people like to pump the accelerator repeatedly after they start up their car. This is not necessary anymore in nowadays car as they can continue to heat up to a optimum temperature when they are on the road. The recommended idling time before you move your car is about 30 seconds more or less. 4. Changing gears For manual transmission cars, the best rpm to change into next engaging gear is around 2,000 to 3,000 rpm. Many people thinks that by changing gears at lower rpm will safe fuel but they do not know that it will hurts the engine if its done often. Changing gear in lower than 2,000 will drag the engine thus increasing wear and tear.As for automatic transmission cars, adjust your foot according to the rpm given above. If you think this is fussy, just is light on your foot, as it will automatically change gear in its optimum power level. For both type of transmission above, changing gears at the optimum not only saves fuel, but also decrease the wear and tear of the engine as well as promises a decent power to your car's acceleration. 5. Choose handling, sacrifices fuel economy? When I refer to this, some of you will have the tyres come into your mind. Yes, you are right! Try to keep your tyres width size according to the manufacturer's recommendation. If you change it to wider tyres, you will again increase the rolling resistance and thus increasing the fuel economy at the same time. Yes, you are right when you say people mentioning that wider tyres does gives more grip, but you have to ask yourself does it necessary? Are you willing to choose handling but sacrificing the fuel economy? Last but not least, do not change your set of tyres to a more thinner unit just because it safe fuel, it will affect the handling characteristic and you might be in danger if your car does not grip the road well. Bear in mind that the car's manufacturer promises you the best measurement in terms of all aspect. 6. Keep your air filter clean Dirty and clogged air filter restrict the airflow to get into the engine, by using common sense, we already know it increase the fuel consumption. So, wash your filter if it is a washable type whenever it needs and change it if it is not washable, normally during car service time. 7. Advice when cruising at highway Keep your speed as constant as possible to save fuel. When you brake and accelerate again, it will consume quite some fuel due to the speed you travel at the highway. Remember, at highway your car build speed against the wind and it drags your car according to the aerodynamic rules. That is why this advice is important when cruising at highways. 8. Don't install any exterior unnecessary parts Bear in mind that the manufacturer's specification for your car including aerodynamic are at its best promising the good combination of all aspect including the fuel economy. Some people do think that by adding extra parts similar to racing cars like spoilers, sunroof (when opened), wide bumper and etc will add the stability of the car when they travel. In fact, it does help if it is done correctly and professionally but most of them were just 'plug and play'. They will cause more drags to the car and in some case it increases the fuel economy by up to 20%!! |
